Description

Explore some of the greatest Egypt monument on our exciting tour of the East Luxor and West Bank. This is a gallery of the royal world comprising the Valley of Kings, Temple of Hatshepsut, Colossi Memnon, and Karnak Temple. Embark on this tour to see Luxor's most iconic sites as it takes you through its belief, power, and legacy.

If you're starting from Nile's west side, your first stop is the Valley of Kings, just opposite Thebes or modern-day Luxor. For over five centuries, the most powerful men in ancient Egypt's New Kingdom, including merchants and Pharaohs, were buried in this secluded valley. That includes Ramesses II, Tutankhamun, and Seti I. They all believed that death was only the beginning, so they preferred the stone tombs so their journey to the afterlife would be safe and protected.

You might want to look out for Tutankhamum’s tombstone. His is one of the most intact ones compared to the rest.

One fascinating thing about the site is that from the outside, it looks bare. But when you go in, there are corridors and chambers traditionally decorated, with inscriptions and paintings carved in the walls.

After exploring the valley, there's the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, also called Djeser-Djeseru, built into the cliff at Deir El-Bahari. Inside the temple, you'll see the reliefs of the Queen's expenditure to the land of Punt. You are basically reading state history on the chamber walls. The temple was also connected to the Beautiful Festival of the Valley, marking the god Amun’s sacred journey across the west bank.

Next is the Colossi of Memnon, where two monumental statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III are seated facing the Nile. The design technique in this area is quite impressive, so you may just linger a little.

One fable the guide will probably tell you is the singing legend. In 27 BCE, an earthquake was said to have damaged the statue in the north, after which it started making an ancient sound. They say it was like whistling, the sound from a lyre string. You can almost feel it as you stand staring up at it.

After the West Bank experience, head over to the East Bank to see the grand Karnak Temple, a temple so large it feels like an entire ancient city. You'll love the Great Hypostyle Hall with its 134 massive columns and faint traces of history still covering the hall.

Just on the side, there's the huge 129m by 77m Sacred Lake used for rites like the Opet Festival processions.

Needless to say, by the time you're done exploring these remarkable sites, it marks your mind forever.

West Bank of Luxor

Your exciting tour starts on the West Bank of the Nile, the sacred land of tombs and temples where pharaohs prepared for eternity.

Valley of the Kings

Your first stop will be at the legendary Valley of the Kings, the royal cemetery of the New Kingdom (c. 1550-1070 BC). Here, you will explore a selection of richly decorated underground tombs belonging to powerful pharaohs such as Tutankhamun, Seti I, and Ramses II. Your guide will tell you about the burial practices, the carvings on the walls, and the beliefs regarding the afterlife that defined this great period in the history of ancient Egypt.

Temple of Queen Hatshepsut (Deir El-Bahari)

Next, you will visit the impressive Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. This stylish terraced temple was constructed in the 15th century BC to honor one of the most successful female rulers of Egypt. The temple itself, as well as its reliefs, were dedicated to the god Amun and were designed not only with the motives of religious worship but also with the heritage of Queen Hatshepsut as a mighty pharaoh.

Colossi of Memnon

After this, you will see the Colossi of Memnon, two massive seated statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III that once guarded the entrance to the Theban necropolis. These iconic monuments have stood on the Theban plain for over three thousand years and remain one of Luxor's most recognizable landmarks.

(Optional stop at Medinet Habu, the mortuary temple of Ramses III, may be included if time allows.)

East Bank of Luxor

When you are done sightseeing at the West Bank, you will cross to the East Bank. This was once the vibrant heart of ancient Thebes, home to Egypt's most powerful temples.

Karnak Temple Complex

You will also visit the huge Karnak Temple Complex, which dates back to the year 1971BC and 20BC, the largest religious site ever built. Dedicated to the Theban triad Amun, Mut and Khonsu, Karnak was built over centuries, and its structure includes towering pylons, on the sacred lakes and the famous Great Hypostyle Hall, with its forest of giant columns.

Luxor Temple & Avenue of Sphinxes

You will then continue your trip to the beautifully preserved Luxor Temple that is gracefully situated in the heart of the city. The temple provides a captivating insight into the ceremonial life in ancient times because it is known for its grand courtyard, colonnades, and the historic Avenue of Sphinxes.
