Start your four-day holiday cruise with a visit to the Karnak Temple in Luxor. You may need to spend half the day here because it is a very large religious site. In fact, it is the largest religious complex ever constructed in Egypt and even in the world, with its grounds spreading over 100 acres.
You’ll love a stroll through the Great Hypostyle Hall. Take your time to really study the intricate inscriptions carved into the walls and let yourself get lost in the history that's unfolding all around you. Keep an eye out for those massive obelisks of Queen Hatshepsut & Thutmose I, the old sacred lake that was once used for purification rituals, the Temple of Amun-Ra, & the Festival Hall built by Thutmose III. All of these add another chapter to the story of just how great Karnak used to be.
From there, carry on down the historic Avenue of the Sphinxes to the mind-blowing Luxor Temple. This UNESCO World Heritage Site that Amenhotep III built during the New Kingdom is still pretty impressive. The standout bits include Ramses II's grand pylon, those massive statues of his, the obelisk, the Court of Ramses II, the Mosque of Abu Haggag, which is somehow nestled inside the temple, & that elegant Grand Colonnade Hall.
Taking it all in as you walk through the temple, you can't help but notice the different eras of history just blending in with each other to create this one truly amazing site.
In the evening, you can head back to your cruise boat to relax, enjoy local delicacies, and take in the calm atmosphere.
As you continue to the west bank of Luxor, you’ll arrive first at the Valley of the Kings, which was built for pharaohs and powerful nobles. The tombs are carved into limestone cliffs, so you’ll have to descend underground to explore their chambers. The Valley of the Kings was designed that way to protect the pharaohs on their afterlife journey. The inscriptions on the wall make the visit quite eventful because they show you what that journey looks like.
You will see the same thing at the nearby Valley of the Queens, although it is more vibrant. There are 90 tombs of queens, princesses, and royal family members from the New Kingdom period in the chambers. In ancient times, the site was called Ta-Set-Neferu, meaning the place of beauty. You will testify to that, walking around the open tombs, seeing the art and decorations all around.
One of the tombs you should definitely explore is the Tomb of Nefertari, known as one of the most beautiful tombs in Egypt. Also visit the tomb of Amunherkhepshef, the son of Ramses II, admiring the inscribed scenes of his father presenting him to various Egyptian gods. Look out as well for the tomb of Queen Tiy and the tomb of Khaemwaset, another son of Ramses III. The reliefs show him alongside his father, presented as a guardian of the gates.
After visiting the fantastic tombs of the South, continue your tour with a visit to the Temple of Horus the Elder in Edfu. This incredible temple, dating back to the Ptolemaic period (237 - 57 BC) is one of the many examples of ancient architecture that still stands today and still looks as impressive as it did back then. Stroll around the walls and take in the intricate stories that are etched into them, like the famous battle between Horus and his uncle Set, and find out who came out on top in the end.
Take a break from all the history and head back to your cruise boat, and just chill as it takes you to Kom Ombo. This place is a seriously special dual temple dedicated to Horus the Elder and Sobek, the crocodile god. Its symmetry is one of a kind and really gets you thinking about how balance and harmony can exist in the same place.
While you are in the area, it is a good idea to pop by the Crocodile Museum, you won’t be disappointed. You will be amazed by the sheer number of mummified crocodiles on show, along with preserved eyes and teeth, and yes crocodile fetuses too! The ancient Egyptians held crocodiles in very high regard, especially Sobek. So to see so many of them all neatly mummified and now on display is pretty mind-blowing.
There is still so much more to see and experience in the area, including a trip to Gebel El-Silsila, where you can explore its ancient sandstone quarries. Then, from there, head to the magic of Aswan with its incredible temples, vibrant Nubian villages, and some really cool museums to boot.
Add all these amazing experiences to your to-do list when you book this 4-day Christmas break with TRAVAIZ. It’s only a short holiday, but one that is guaranteed to give you some unforgettable memories.
You will be picked up from your hotel in Aswan with your private Egyptologist guide to begin your 4-Day Egypt Christmas Nile Cruise Tour with Traviaz. Your day will include visits to Aswan’s most iconic landmarks.
Your first stop is the Aswan High Dam, a landmark of modern Egyptian engineering. The dam was completed in the 20 th century, and it is very important in controlling the floods along the Nile, generating hydroelectric power, and creating one of the largest artificial lakes in the world, Lake Nasser.
The unfinished Obelisk
Next, you will visit the Unfinished Obelisk, located in the ancient granite quarries of Aswan. This obelisk was commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut, and was meant to be the tallest obelisk in the history of its construction. During its carving, cracks were found that led to the abandonment of the project, leaving behind the rare and valuable experience of the ancient Egyptian method of stone-cutting.
Philae Temple
Continue your tour to the beautiful Philae Temple, dedicated primarily to the goddess Isis. Dating back to the Greco-Roman period(380-362 BC), this temple is closely associated with the myth of Osiris, his death at the hands of Set, and his resurrection through the devotion of Isis. Philae Temple is, to this day, one of the most ambient and eye-catching places along the Nile.
