Launch this Easter trip with a visit to the 2000-year old Karnak Temple. Don’t be fooled by the name because it is a whole complex of sanctuaries, courtyards, pylons, and chapels. First, you’ll see the Great Hypostyle Hall with 134 massive columns. Pay attention to the reliefs and inscriptions on the walls and columns with scenes of Seti I and Ramesses II making sacrifices to Amun-Re, Mut, and Montu.
Next, you can take the connecting walkway, the Avenue of the Sphinxes, to Luxor Temple. You can also take the Nile route since the temple is just by the river, on the East Bank. Luxor Temple is not as large as Karnak, but it also contains status, obelisks, courts, a mosque, and sanctuaries as old as time.
When you are done exploring the East Bank, move to the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of Luxor. The Valley of the Kings is filled with colorful tombs of New Kingdom Pharaohs and the reliefs that give you a glimpse into the afterlife. History has it that Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered here alongside treasures and artifacts.
While still on the West Bank, go see the two guard statues at the Colossi of Memnon and Temple of the legendary Queen Hatshepsut. You can learn about her life, beliefs, and trade secrets just by walking around the temple, reading the paintings in the chambers.
As you journey from Luxor, make a brief stop at the Esna Lock to see the Temple of Khnum. From there, head to Edfu to see one of the best preserved temples in Egypt, the Temple of Horus. You want to look out for the carvings on the temple walls to see the mythological battle between Seth and Horus.
Also visit the Dual temples of Kom Ombo dedicated to Horus, the Elder, and Sobek, the Crocodile god. You will particularly love the unique duality of these temples, with one side representing order and the other, chaos.
Take a smooth boat ride all the way to Aswan to see the historical island temples. You can start your tour at Philae Temple at Agilkia. You’ll appreciate the calmness in the area, the intricate reliefs, and most of all, the well-preserved structure. You’ll be surprised to find out that it was not the temple’s original spot. It was moved in an attempt to stop the Nile from submerging it, and that paid off.
While in Aswan, also visit the Unfinished Obelisk, Aswan High Dam, Elephantine Island, and the Nubian villages.
At the end of your Nile cruise, take a moment to dine at a riverside cafe, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere.
