Description

Start your week in Cairo by seeing the 4500-year-old wonders of the Giza Complex. You can’t miss the biggest pyramid on site, the Great Pyramid of Khufu. It was built with over 2 million limestone blocks, and you just can’t unsee the skillful design and architecture standing near it.

Nearby, you’ll see the Great Sphinx sitting on its source bedrock as if watching over the Pyramids of Giza. Legend has it that it carries the face of Pharaoh Khafre, while others believe it’s his father’s, Khufu.

Visit Saqqara to see the first work of the famous architect Imhotep, the Step Pyramid of Djoser. It’s the father of all pyramids, as the construction of other pyramids started from there.

While still in the city, visit the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) to see the full Tutankhamun collection as you listen to the myths surrounding his sudden demise.

From there, spend a day or two in Old Cairo, seeing historical sites like the Hanging Church and Coptic Mosque. Don’t forget to shop for snacks, souvenirs, and spices at the Khan El-Khalili after.

Your next stop is the serene city of Aswan. You’ll enjoy your time here if you take the river route, either on a cruise boat or a felucca ride on the Nile.

You may want to start with a visit to a traditional Nubian village to see a different side of Egypt, but if you’d like to see the temples first, start at Philae Temple.

After, take a day tour to Tombs of the Nobles, also known as Qubbet el-Hawa. You have to climb the hills to get there, but it’s totally worth it if you love rock climbing and history. In the chambers, watch out for the decorations and detailed hieroglyphic texts recounting daily life as it was in the Old Kingdom.

Go to the Nubian Museum afterwards to learn about Nubian history, right from the prehistoric period to civilization.

Visit the Abu Simbel Temples to see the rock temples of Ramesses II and his wife, Nefertari. Explore deeper into the chambers to see the impressive rock statues of Osiris, Ramesses, Amon Ra, Ptah, Hathor, Re-Horakhti, and Nefertari.

Next, we head to Luxor, and we’ll start the tour at the over 2000-year-old Karnak Temple. First, you want to check the Hypostyle Hall, constructed with 12 massive central columns. You can imagine the priests walking through the passage carrying out religious rites for the God, Amun. There are also sanctuaries, courtyards, pylons, and chapels…it’s a whole city of sacred ground in there, so you’ll most likely spend a whole day touring.

Next, head over to the west bank to see the Valley of the Kings. It’s hidden in plain sight, so you’ll never see the beauty of the burial sites until you go into the chambers. And in the chambers, you’ll see vibrant wall paintings showing you insights into the afterlife.

The Temple of Hatshepsut is nearby, clinging to the limestone cliffs. Queen Hatshepsut is one of the powerful female Pharaohs, and her temple just shows you her divine birth, reign, and trading expedition.

There’s a lot more to see throughout Cairo and Upper Egypt on this trip, so anticipate a week filled with awe, discovery, and memorable sceneries that stay with you long after you return home.
