Description

We start early with a transfer to Cairo Airport for your one-hour flight to Luxor. From there, your private guide meets you and the fun begins straight away on Luxor's West Bank, the eerie ancient necropolis of Thebes.

First stop is the Valley of the Kings, the burial ground of the New Kingdom pharaohs (roughly 16th to 11th centuries before our era). This is the place where the pharaohs got laid to rest, hidden away in rock-cut tombs in the desert cliffs to keep their mummies and treasure safe.

We’re going to be visiting some of the tombs that will wow you. It’s not just the ones you’ve heard of, like Tutankhamun's, but also of Ramesses III or Merenptah. These tombs are still packed full of stunning wall art that really brings the legends of ancient Egypt to life.

Not far away from there is the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. It’s a real showstopper of a monument, built right into the sides of the cliff. Hatshepsut was one of the few women who managed to rise to the very top in ancient Egypt during the 18th Dynasty. She had a thing for trade and grandiose, which you’ll easily see with the stepped designs and intricate carvings in her temple

Next up, we have the Colossi of Memnon, two massive seated statues of Amenhotep III that used to stand guard at his massive mortuary temple. Most of that is long gone now, but the scale of these statues gives you an idea of just how big it must have been.

We’ll take a break for lunch at a local restaurant that we've handpicked especially for this tour. Finally, we head on over to the East Bank in Luxor.

At the Karnak Temple complex, you get to walk through the Great Hypostyle Hall. It’s a massive arrangement of sandstone columns that were mainly put up by Seti I and Ramesses II. This place was more or less the spiritual heart of Egypt for centuries, and it was dedicated to the god Amun-Ra.

While at Karnak, you can see all sorts of incredible sights like obelisks, pylons, and the sacred. It’s amazing to see just how much the complex has grown over the centuries.

To round it all off, we'll stop at Luxor Temple, which just so happens to be connected to Karnak by the Avenue of the Sphinxes. The difference is that while Karnak is all about a much bigger picture, the coronation rituals, Luxor Temple is more about the events and rituals that took place right in the heart of the city. You can see the different layers of history here, including Roman bits and a later mosque that was built inside the temple.

When the day is done, we head back to Luxor Airport for your flight back to Cairo, where we arrange your private transfer back to your hotel.

Itinerary

Your tour will start early in the morning with the Traviaz team picking you up from your hotel in Cairo. You’ll be transferred to the airport for your flight to Luxor.

Upon arrival in Luxor, your professional tour guide will welcome you and escort you to begin your sightseeing tour.

Karnak Temple
Visit the magnificent Karnak Temple Complex, which is dated back to the year 1971BC and 20BC, the largest religious site ever built. Dedicated to the Theban triad Amun, Mut and Khonsu, Karnak was built over centuries, and its structure includes towering pylons, on the sacred lakes and the famous Great Hypostyle Hall, with its forest of giant columns.

Luxor Temple

You will then continue your trip to the beautifully preserved Luxor Temple that is gracefully situated in the heart of the city. Unlike other temples, Luxor Temple was dedicated primarily to royal ceremonies rather than worship alone. Its grand colonnades, statues, and reliefs reflect its importance in coronations and religious festivals and beautifully illustrate the architectural brilliance of ancient Egypt.

Lunch
You will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the West Bank of Luxor.

Valley of the Kings

Explore the Valley of the Kings, the royal cemetery of the New Kingdom (c. 1550-1070 BC). Here, you will explore a selection of richly decorated underground tombs belonging to powerful pharaohs such as Tutankhamun, Seti I, and Ramses II. Your guide will tell you about the burial practices, the carvings on the walls, and the beliefs regarding the afterlife that defined this great period in the history of ancient Egypt

Temple of Queen Hatshepsut

Next, you will visit the impressive Temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. This stylish terraced temple was constructed in the 15th century BC to honor one of the most successful female rulers of Egypt. The temple itself, as well as its reliefs, were dedicated to the god Amun and were designed not only with the motives of religious worship but also with the heritage of Queen Hatshepsut as a mighty pharaoh.

After a full day of discovery, you will be transferred back to Luxor Airport for your return flight to Cairo, followed by a transfer to your hotel.
