Your trip starts with us picking you up at your hotel in Cairo early in the morning. It’s a 2-hour journey thereabout, and we’re going to ensure your comfort throughout the ride. Our friendly tour guide will be there to answer questions and tell you about AlFayoum before arrival.
The tour typically starts at Lake Qarun, but we may have to go through Tunis Village. It’s a small Egyptian neighbourhood known for handmade pottery. Back in the 80s, Evelyne Porret, a Swiss potter, built a pottery studio in the village after being mesmerized by its charms. She went on to train the local kids who opened their own pottery studio after mastering the art.
Now, Tunis Village holds Egypt’s biggest pottery festival that attracts lots of tourists yearly. You can do a quick stop to appreciate the warmth and artistic ambiance over there.
Now, to Lake Qarun. It’s a scenic, large natural saltwater lake popular for birdwatching and photography. The ideal time you want to be here is sunset, so you can take stunning photos of the wildlife on a relaxed felucca ride.
Wadi El Rayan is another possible location on this tour, offering you one of the best scenes in Egypt. You’re going to find Egypt’s only waterfalls here. And the most amazing thing is the waterfalls were actually formed when irrigation water from the farms started flowing into the desert! The sight of water glinting in the desert, with golden sand dunes stretching out as far as the eye can see is one of those moments you never forget. If you're feeling up for it, we can even arrange some sandboarding on the nearby dunes, or you can just take a leisurely stroll and take it all in.
Next is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Wadi El Hitan, otherwise called the Valley of the Whales. About 40-50 million years ago, there was a shallow sea in the area. When the water gradually dried up, thousands of whale fossils remained, leaving behind traces of the life that was once there.
You’ll probably not see it all on this one-day trip, but it’s going to be quite an eventful walk, taking in the sights.
By late afternoon, you can have lunch at a local restaurant we have carefully selected for your enjoyment. Once you've got your fill, we'll drop you back in Cairo where you can continue exploring this amazing country of ours.
Your day begins with pickup from your hotel in a modern air-conditioned vehicle, accompanied by your professional Egyptologist, heading toward the natural wonders of Fayoum.
Lake Qarun is the largest saltwater lake in Egypt, and it is among the most important natural landmarks in Faiyum Oasis. The lake also provides an essential habitat to migratory birds, particularly in winter, as they attract birds in Europe and other places.
Visit the spectacular Valley of the Whales, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site that conserves the fossil record of the prehistoric whales.
It is an incredible outdoor museum that shows the evolutionary process of whales and how these mammals evolved into sea mammals more than 40 million years ago.
The desert landscape, scattered with ancient skeletons of whales embedded in the sand, forms an educational experience like no other on earth.
The Pyramid of Hawara, built by Pharaoh Amenemhat III of the Middle Kingdom and believed to be his burial place. The site was once associated with the legendary “Labyrinth” described by ancient historians.
Nearby, you will learn about the tomb of Princess Neferu-Ptah and the historical significance of this important ancient complex.
See the iconic water wheels of Fayoum, ancient irrigation systems that have supported agriculture in the oasis for thousands of years. These wooden wheels, driven by the guidance of natural flowing water, remain symbolic of the long-standing farming traditions and connection to the land.
These ancient systems are a living reminder of how clever Egyptian people were in terms of how they used water and materials and how they were able to survive in the desert landscape.
After completing your tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel to relax after a memorable day exploring Fayoum.
