Description

Start with the Pyramids of Giza themselves. These three massive tombs had been built on a rocky outcropping right on the edge of the Nile. They were put up during the Old Kingdom era in Egypt, between 2580 and 2560 BC, as a place to lay to rest three very important pharaohs - Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.

The one at the northern end of the site, the one built for Khufu, is the biggest and arguably the most famous of the three, and originally stood a towering 146.5 meters high. It's been holding the title of being the only remaining wonder from the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World for a staggering 4,000 years and counting.

The Great Pyramid of Giza (that's the one built for Khufu) is an engineering marvel that still leaves us in awe even today, considering how precise it is. The base is level to within a centimeter or so, and the sides are almost dead on the four main directions. It's reckoned it took around 20 years to get the job done, using about 2.3 million limestone blocks, each weighing anything from 2.5 to 15 tons on average.

To this day, plenty of research is still going on into these structures to see if there are still secrets hidden inside those sealed-up tombs. They keep finding new clues about how they planned and went about building these amazing structures.

Moving a bit south across the plateau, you can't miss the Pyramid of Khafre. It's a bit smaller than the one next door, but it appears to be higher up, and if you look closely at some of the casing stones, some of them are still intact up near the top. We have the mortuary temple there too, and it is connected to a valley temple, which is down by the Nile's floodplain via a long stone causeway.

Standing directly next to Khafre's pyramid is the Pyramid of Menkaure, the smallest of the three but still pretty impressive in its own right. Some of the research done recently has even hinted at some sort of super-smooth stone area on the eastern side.

Don’t leave the Giza Plateau without seeing the Great Sphinx. It's this massive stone creature carved right out of one big block of limestone with a lion's body and a human head. It's just sat there near Khafre's complex for thousands of years now, symbolising the power and protection of the royal family.

The pyramids, for a start, were not singular monuments. Each of them was part of a much bigger setup of a large funerary complex. So, you’ll see other buildings, like temples, causeways, mastabas, and other small tombs.

The precision of the construction shows the ancient Egyptians had a real knack for maths, astronomy, and planning big projects. And the fact that they've lasted for so long is a testament to how good the ancient Egyptian society was at getting things done.

While on your trip, make sure you give yourself time to take in just how massive these monuments are and the history that's connected to them.

To put the pyramids into perspective, visit either the Egyptian Museum or the Grand Egyptian Museum. There you'll find statues, ancient tools, and all sorts of royal treasures that help flesh out the people whose hands built and used these iconic monuments.

Your trip to Cairo and the Pyramids wouldn't be complete without acknowledging that Giza is way more than just a photo opportunity. Its an actual active archaeological site and a pretty amazing reminder that ancient Egyptians were in it for the long haul.
