Our first stop will be Cairo, so you can meet the legends of the Giza Plateau first. This is the kind of place that humbles you instantly. You’ll see the massive Great Pyramid of Khufu and the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure with the city built around them. The Great Sphinx of Giza also sits in the area staring mysteriously, its 4500 years showing on its face.
After Giza, the Grand Egyptian Museum is just nearby, so we hop into that to see millennia of history displayed across the huge building. Look out for King Tutankhamun’s tomb and treasures, the Great Hall, and the Great Staircase, although you’ll hardly miss them.
We’ll take you into the parts of Cairo you may not expect to love so much. Go to the Citadel to get a wholesome view of the city from above. It was built in the 12th century for protection, so of course, it gives you that vantage point where you can spot the enemies before they attack. And within the walls, you can see the Egyptian Military Museum with the fireplanes display, the Police Museum, and Al-Gawhara Palace.
Next, go into Islamic Cairo to see the maze of mosques, madrasas, and busy markets. You can take a break at the Al-Ahzhar Park and walk through the scenic gardens and palm-lined walkways. The night view over there is something you’d remember for a while if you stick around.
On one of the days, you can spend time at Andrea on the Giza Plateau to have grilled food in the open. For a deluxe evening experience, try the Abou Tarek near Tahrir Square or relax on a rooftop around Zamalek watching the Nile.
Then we move to Alexandria to experience the calmer and more relaxing air. Let’s start at the Citadel of Qaitbay on the eastern harbor, where you’ll see the ruins of the Lighthouse of Alexandria. You’ll also visit the Bibliotheca Alexandrina to see the exhibitions, manuscript museum, and planetarium. If you love history, you’d want to stop by the Alexandria National Museum to see the Italian palace, pharaonic era artifacts, Greco-Roman exhibits, and the Coptic treasures.
The Kom El Shoqafa is also on the list of must-visit sites with its very old underground burial complex. You won’t believe it was discovered when a donkey fell through the hole, but it’s true.
You should visit Pompey's Pillar to see the Greco-Roman side of Alexandria near the Serapeum ruins. As you wind down on the Alexandria tour, you can go to the scenic Montazah Gardens to take a walk, relax, and enjoy the beaches.
