Starting from Cairo, there is a whole city of monuments to uncover, including pyramids, museums, mosques, sanctuaries, and tombs. You’d want to start right at the Giza Complex where three of the largest pyramids sit in Egypt. These include the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure. Also in the area is the Great Sphinx, smaller pyramids, and burial complexes.
Egypt's newest heritage, the Grand Egyptian Museum, is only about two kilometers away, so you can just go there next. There is so much to look at because it houses over 100,000 artifacts representing the ancient Egyptian culture and dynasty. Don’t worry, you can take your time here since this is a 12-day trip.
Once you're satisfied, head into the city to explore the depths of Cairo. You’d want to see Old Cairo streets first, where there are a lot of ancient and modern sites. Some of the most fascinating and historical areas include Coptic Cairo, the Hanging Church, the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, Ben Ezra Synagogue, the Babylon Fortress, and Khan Khalili market.
If Cairo wowed you, prepare to be blown away in Alexandria. Let’s start with the Citadel of Qaitbay, where you will get the most amazing views of the city and the waters from a mesmerizing vantage point. There’s a whole lot of history to uncover inside the Citadel, and usually the guides are excited to tell the stories of how it protected the city from the Ottoman Empire.
If you love the history of the Egyptian heritage and want more depth than what you can see, you don’t want to miss a visit to the Bibliotheca Alexandria (the Library of Alexandria). Though the original library no longer exists, the modern Library of Alexandria honors its legacy as one of the most influential libraries in human history.
Spend a day at the catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a burial site and one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. Most of the catacombs date back to the Roman period, while the carvings and artwork also show Greek and Roman influence.
Between the land tours, enjoy a smoother and calmer tour on the Nile via boat cruises. It’s as exciting and adventurous as the cities themselves and even better. You’ll have front row views of temples in a way you’ll never see from the streets.
There’s more to see on our 12-day Cairo, Alexandria, and Nile Cruise package, but we’ll leave you to uncover the rest, one memorable stop at a time.
