Description

Start your five-day Christmas getaway in Cairo with a visit to the legendary Giza Pyramid Complex. It is a place where you can stand in awe of the pyramids and take your time taking it all in, wandering the plateau, taking snaps, and just letting the grandeur wash over you. And if you step inside one of the pyramids, the contrast is quite something.

Next, you will head to the Grand Egyptian Museum. This is an impressive space that houses artifacts that date back over 4,500 years. Walk through the 12 main galleries at your own pace and dip in and out of different eras of ancient Egypt as you go.

Don't forget to spend some time in the Tutankhamun galleries, where all the young king's treasures are finally all together in one place, thousands of them.

From there, you can head into Coptic Cairo to get a feel for the city's history. Visit the Hanging Church, one of the oldest churches in Egypt. The Coptic Christmas celebrations are on January 7, so you might see special decorations and services if you're visiting around that time, but even at other times of the year, it’s a peaceful and beautiful spot.

Also, make sure to check out the Church of Saint Sergius and Bacchus. The church is said to be linked with the Holy Family's journey to Egypt. Downstairs, you'll find a crypt that a lot of people believe was a hiding place for Mary, Joseph & baby Jesus when they fled from King Herod. It’s a quiet little space that adds some real depth to your Christmas visit in Cairo.

Then you can head to the Ben Ezra Synagogue. The sacred site is traditionally linked to the story of Moses being found in the Nile, and that adds even more significance when visiting during Christmas.

There’s also the Saint Simon Monastery, also known as the Cave Church. It is one of the largest churches in the Middle East, and there is so much happening across its stone walls, so pay close attention to the inscriptions and carvings throughout the space. During Christmas, there is usually a large gathering you might be interested in joining, commemorating the season with other believers.

When you’re done in Cairo, explore Luxor next.

In Luxor, start on the east bank at the Karnak Temple. This is a 200-acre complex, housing sites like the Hypostyle Hall, towering pylons, chapels, and sanctuaries. Within Karnak, stroll along the Avenue of the Sphinxes to reach Luxor Temple.

Despite being smaller than Karnak, this ancient Egyptian site is still one of Egypt's most impressive complexes. Notable features include the grand pylon, a mosque built slap bang in the temple grounds, the Roman-era frescoes scattered about in various spots, and a shrine put up by Alexander the Great, a pretty big deal at the time.

After having a good poke around the east bank, head over to the west bank, where the famous pharaoh tombs and burial sites of high society types can be found.

The first spot you ought to visit on the west bank is the Valley of the Kings. What looks at first to be a pretty low-key site actually has a secret treasure trove of tombs built for the pharaohs & other big shots, hidden away deep underground. As you make your way down to them its like the desert just dissolves away & these incredible spaces pop up out of the hills.

After the Valley of the Kings, you can visit the Valley of the Queens, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, Medinet Habu, Dier el-Medina, the Ramesseum, and the Colossi of Memnon to continue your tour of the West Bank.

After a well-spent day, spend an early night at a nearby restaurant, enjoying traditional Egyptian food, like kebab, Kofta, and mashi.

Memphis

Memphis was once the capital of ancient Egypt and was founded around 3100 BCE by the legendary king Menes.
